The sequence of events and manner in which HAL is shut down differs between the novel and film versions of the story. However, as time progresses, HAL begins to malfunction in subtle ways and, as a result, the decision is made to shut down HAL in order to prevent more serious malfunctions.
In the film, the artificial intelligence is shown to triumph easily. As a recreational activity, Frank Poole plays chess against HAL. In 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), HAL is initially considered a dependable member of the crew, maintaining ship functions and engaging genially with his human crew-mates on an equal footing. The film says this occurred in 1992, while the book gives 1997 as HAL's birth year. HAL became operational in Urbana, Illinois, at the HAL Plant (the University of Illinois's Coordinated Science Laboratory, where the ILLIAC computers were built). 1.3 2061: Odyssey Three and 3001: The Final OdysseyĪppearances 2001: A Space Odyssey (film/novel).
1.2 2010: Odyssey Two (novel) and 2010: The Year We Make Contact (film). In addition to maintaining the Discovery One spacecraft systems during the interplanetary mission to Jupiter (or Saturn in the novel), HAL has been shown to be capable of speech, speech recognition, facial recognition, natural language processing, lip reading, art appreciation, interpreting emotional behaviours, automated reasoning, spacecraft piloting and playing chess. The activation year was 1991 in earlier screenplays and changed to 1997 in Clarke's novel written and released in conjunction with the movie. In the film, HAL became operational on 12 January 1992 at the HAL Laboratories in Urbana, Illinois as production number 3. HAL speaks in a soft, calm voice and a conversational manner, in contrast to the crewmen, David Bowman and Frank Poole. HAL 9000 is voiced by Douglas Rain in the two feature film adaptations of the Space Odyssey series. While part of HAL's hardware is shown toward the end of the film, he is mostly depicted as a camera lens containing a red or yellow dot, with such units located throughout the ship. First appearing in the 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey, HAL ( Heuristically programmed ALgorithmic computer) is a sentient artificial general intelligence computer that controls the systems of the Discovery One spacecraft and interacts with the ship's astronaut crew. HAL 9000 is a fictional artificial intelligence character and the main antagonist in Arthur C. 2 × Ground based HAL 9000 used by Mission Control.
